This is Otaku.

Otaku is the japanese word for nerd. It is a word used to label a big group. The intent of this adventure is to help define Otaku.

An American Otaku studied abroad in Japan for 1 semester. The Otaku has only learned about Japanese culture through Manga. When he goes to Japan he thinks that he can live the experience he has read through, but realizes that this is not the case.

He ventures to Japan in hopes that he will become a manga artist. What will his future be? Will he become a Manga artist? Will he stay an Otaku? Find out!

Meet the cast.

Throughout the game you will interact with many characters - but the Otaku is the main character.

Kou Shujin

The protagonist of the game. Kou arrived in Japan only knowing of its langauge and culture from his experience with manga, anime, and video games. Apart from being an otaku, he strives to be a professional manga artist, and takes up a manga writing major at the Tokyo Animation College. He stays with a host family for the duration of his study abroad, but meets interesting people throughout his travels.

Yuusuke Sakamoto

A host family member. Studying law at Waseda University, Yuusuke acts as a welcoming host brother towards Kou. Although he's never been friends with an otaku before, he admires Kou's devotion to follow his dream of being a manga artist.

A host family member. A typical high school girl, the real kind. Kou sees Yurika as a perfect character base for his own manga series about high schoolers, but gradually realizes that real people aren't too much like the people he knew in anime.

Tyler Porten

Product Manager // Lead Artist

Tyler Porten is enrolled in the Bachelor of Humanities and Arts program at Carnegie Mellon, an interdisciplinary major that combines concentrations in Fine Arts and Japanese. He is also a double major in Human-Computer Interaction. His interests include 2D and 3D animation, game design, illustration, cartooning and music production. His work is influenced by traditional and contemporary styles from both Western and Japanese sources. He lived in Japan as a child, and later studied in Tokyo as part of his CMU curriculum.

Mark Strelow

Game Developer

Mark Strelow is an animator and is currently studying computer science and art at Carnegie Mellon. Prior to joining Gambatte, he worked with the Boston Children's Museum as a design and production intern. He enjoys working on character animation as well as programming projects.

Game Developer // Information Architect

Kyna McIntosh is a programmer and artist by trade. She currently studies computer science and art at Carnegie Mellon and will graduate in Fall 2014. She has programmed and produced art for Disney Research Pittsburgh and created themed art for Ichumon, LLC.

New Member Joins the Otaku Team!

Ganbatte Games just appointed former Frod CEO Nala Lumally to its board. Lumally retired from Frod on November 1, and he'll serve on Ganbatte's Design Committee. Before Frod, Lumally was the CEO of Beoing Commercial Airplanes.

"I am honored to serve on the board of a global iconic company that is dedicated to enhancing the entertainment experience in our lives," Lumally says in a Ganbatte interview exclusive about the appointment. "I look forward to working together with the Ganbatte team to continue to deliver their compelling vision."

Lumally will be joining the ranks of Tyler Porten, Mark Strelow, Kyna McIntosh, Ben Porten and Adam Shield on Ganbatte's team.
